Tribute to the Thomasians
“Pasasalamat sa Tomasinong Kompositor”

The Conservatory of Music invites you to its concert entitled “Tribute to the Thomasians: Pasasalamat sa Tomasinong Kompositor” on November 17, 2019, 6 p.m., at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The Conservatory will feature the musical masterpieces of Bernardino Custodio, Antonino Buenaventura, Ernani Cuenco, Fr. Manuel Maramba, OSB, and Julio Esteban Anguita.

Moreover, the musical pieces of Dean Antonio P. Africa, PhD, Asst. Prof. Leo Nilo Mangussad, and Asst. Prof. Herminigildo Ranera, PhD, will also be played as a part of the tribute.

Reynato M. Resurreccion Jr. and Ranera will be the maestros of this night of musical homage.

Thomasian Musicians
Bernardino Custodio served as the director of the Conservatory of Music from 1958 to 1961. He earned his Master of Arts in the University in 1959. His notable works were Pauli-uli, Sarimanok, Ritual Dance, Vision, and The Juggler.

In 1961, National Artist for Music Antonino Buenaventura served as the director of the Conservatory of Music. He reorganized the UST Symphony Orchestra during his time in the University. His works include the Triumphal March, Echoes of the Past, History Fantasy, Second Symphony in E-flat, Echoes from the Philippines, and Ode to Freedom.

Ernani Cuenco took a degree in Cielo and Piano in the University in 1965. Cuenco was feted National Artist for Music in 1999 for enriching Filipino love songs by whisking elements of kundiman. His major works include Nahan, Kahit na Magtiis; Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa; Pilipinas; Inang Bayan; and Gaano Kita Kamahal.

Professorial Lecturer Fr. Manuel Maramba, OSB, orchestrated the UST Hymn. His three operatic works were Lord Takayama Ukon, Abal Sto. Niño, and La Naval.

Julio Esteban Anguita was a celebrated Thomasian composer who weaved the musical aspect of the UST Hymn. Anguita served as the first dean of the Conservatory of Music.
